Central Heating Systems: an Overview
One of the most common standard heating systems used in most public buildings and homes is central heating systems. In places with cold climates these central heating systems are mostly used. There is a central location where the heating system which includes a heating unit such as a heat pump, furnace, boiler is positioned.
Oil, coal, electricity, natural gas, or other fuels can be used as fuel for the heating unit. Heat is dispersed throughout the whole building when the central unit heats air, steam, or water. Ductwork, piping, or radiators which are in the outlying spaces may be part of the system.
When the building is large, the furnace of boiler is placed in a central location which is usually a furnace room, boiler room, or mechanical room. The piping or ductwork or a furnace or boiler is carried to all parts of the building. For HVAC systems that are forced air units, ductwork carries the heated air to the rooms. With a fan or blower, the air is circulated through the ducts into the rooms. If there is a thermostat set within a room or are, the heat is controlled. To prevent blowing or forcing dust or mold into the rooms there are filters or air cleaners attached to the system.
